• Just starting out in Power Point? Keep it as simple as possible. Text and photos may be all that you need or want. Nerves escalate when we are suddenly a part of something new and different, so keeping it simple makes for calmer nerves. On your next presentation, add a bit more to your slides.
• Even if you’re somewhat of a pro, don’t put too much (this includes words and animation) on your individual slides. This is not the time to show off, but to make your point.
• Key concepts will always override lovely description, no matter how lovely it is. Stick to the point and allow the comments from your audience to fill in the lovely description of what they understand from your presentation.
• Make sure everything is proofed; there is a big difference between the words “public” and “pubic” for example.
• Font sizes should be between 28 and 34, with as bold a font as possible. Refrain from using a font that looks too “artistic” or “fun.”  You want your audience to be able to read your slides.
• Contrast is good. If you use a dark font, use a light background and vice versa.
• Don’t read word for word what is on your slides.
• Make sure your slides are cohesive, that they flow easily from one to the next.

The better you prepare, the better your Power Point presentation. Use your Power Point presentation to assist you, not to take over your entire presentation—Power Point is not a crutch to use because you don’t really know your material.

• If the information isn’t readily available or easy to understand on the website, try a blog by someone who knows their stuff. These blogs are often run by the company in question anyway, and you often get a layman’s answer to your question rather than a souped up answer that only a techno geek can understand. Linexblog.com for example, has resources for newbies as well as hardware and software information, tutorials and Linux news.
• Subscribe to a feed. Often, blogs will have feeds that you can subscribe to. By subscribing to a feed you get the latest and greatest information sent to your in box.
• Learn before you need to know it. Take a tutorial on site or take a class in your community. Prepare yourself for the inevitable. There will come a time when the information you glean will need to be used—why not prepare ahead?
• Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Many online sites have places to ask questions and get your answers. Don’t call unless you have to, but don’t be afraid to call. Professionals on the other end of the line are trained to answer your questions even if you don’t know or even understand all of the key terms relating to your operating system.

Troubleshooting your operating system doesn’t have to be a literal pain in the neck or even a life long (adventure) if you follow the guidelines above.

These three tips should help:

Clean up the registry. Windows stores its configuring information here, but not all that is included on your registry continues to remain valid. You may have misplaced information, such as a file that got moved, and now the file is clogging your registry.  Use the Windows LiveOne care cleanup scanner to remove anything that is no longer valid within your registry or Full Windows Live One Care. Delete junk files. Junk file cleaners such as CCleaner, Revo Uninstaller, nCleaner and other tools that can be easily installed on your computer remove unwanted junk files. Improve browser speed. Make sure you use a good Spyware program that removes viruses and Trojans from your computer. Getting adware protection is a great addition to the former. Adware automatically downloads, displays or plays advertising against your wishes. Although adware isn’t in and of itself, bad, it does attach itself to Spyware. Empty temporary files, delete cookies, and clear your history at least once a week. Get rid of “startup” items that you are no longer using and no longer need. Increase your computer’s memory but not over the recommended speed.

What do you have to know to use Windows?

Quite a bit.

The good news is that you can learn as you go, taking in the bare minimum at first, and filtering in some fun and wacky stuff as you go along.

Because Windows is almost as common as, well, the microwave oven, it would be fair to say that many of us are looking to go beyond the basics of Windows use and to have some well-needed fun. Get started here with these great ideas; they will more than likely lead you to more.

With Windows 7, Microsoft unveiled a number of cool new features. Some of these which have made tasks easier include:

1. The Problem Steps Recorder or PSR: Many PC users have had trouble explaining to tech support what they did before they encountered a problem, or what the problem is. This fantastic feature is godsend to technicians as they can see what you did. You would need to activate it so as to record your steps, but it is easy to use.
2. Being able to search from the start button has been available since Vista, but is even more of a time saver with Windows 7. It is quite intuitive and a great tool for persons who are not PC savvy.
3. Homegroup setup and networking is easy and this makes sense since just about every household has more than one PC or laptop, not to mention Smartphones. Once a HomeGroup has been set up on one PC or laptop, all the others running Windows 7 will be automatically detected and added.

Granted there is a learning curve to Windows 7, but there are so many useful features it is worth the time it takes to learn. After getting used to the updated interface, finding things on the menu is very easy.

While not everyone thinks it is vital to install these updates when they become available, it is always better to err on the side of caution. This is especially true for those updates that are listed as critical or security updates. These are meant to fix holes in IE (Internet Explorer) or the Windows OS. When these security patches are not used it is easy for virus and other malware to infect a computer or network.

With automatic update it is easy and painless to keep abreast of Windows Updates as they become available. Computer users who activate this feature can relax knowing they are always protected. There are instances when you may need to respond to notifications or give permission for updating to take place. If you would rather not use automatic update, then manually check for them at least once per week. Since security updates are released every second Tuesday of each month, known as Patch Tuesday, later in the week is a good time to check for these patches.

There was a time when some people felt that having just one PC or laptop with antivirus software meant that updates weren’t essential. But these days, with so many people being active online and sharing files it is always better to be safe than sorry.

More and more, users with the Internet Explorer browser are getting notifications that they need to install Microsoft Silverlight when they want to view certain videos. The fact that it is free is an added bonus as anyone who wants it can easily download it.

This is the case with netbooks, which are like scaled down versions of laptops. They are physically smaller and less powerful than even low end models of laptops. Two major advantages however is that netbooks are much lighter, and usually far less expensive. You can even get one for free with the right Internet service contract. Just be sure the rates are to your liking before signing up. As with typical laptops, no netbook is perfect, and some excel in certain areas while falling down in others. Right now netbooks are hot commodities in the tech arena. Many people simply want to access online entertainment and to view their favorite websites especially while on the go. They simply don’t need the kind of processing power that you can expect with laptops or desktop PCs. Current market trends show an increase in demand for these handy devices.

The main positive about these discussion groups is that they promote dialogue between individuals of vastly different points of view. People in various fields are recognizing the importance of and using discussion groups.

Some groups are dedicated to particular topics, while others follow the current news items of the day. Search resources like Bing by Microsoft are often heavily utilized to find newsgroups. The groups function effectively because all users have access to the same data and news reports. Some of the topics that power newsgroup discussions are:

Even learning institutions use newsgroups, or encourage participation to broaden the perspectives of students. In fact, many of the topics discussed on these groups make their way into the classroom. Most newsgroups are free, requiring only an email address to obtain access.

You generally don’t have to worry about whether it will work with Windows, but you do need to see if it will work with your version of Windows. That’s especially true if you have an older version that the newer software might not agree with. Instead of just buying it and assuming, make sure that the software you choose is going to do the job for you and is going to work well with the particular version of operating system that you have. Once you open software you generally can’t take it back, so be sure what you’re buying before you make your purchase.

If you have a newer version of Windows you shouldn’t have any issues with new software. The older versions may only be a problem because of some of the upgrades that have been made to Windows recently. Since the older versions don’t have those upgrades, they could potentially clash with software that is set up for the newer versions. That’s usually not an issue, but it’s always good to find out for sure so you don’t end up frustrated with the installation and out the money that you spent for the software.

Knowing how to work Windows becomes second nature quite quickly, of course, because it’s generally so easy to handle and does so much for the user without the concern of how to figure things out. It’s simple to operate, yet it does a great deal. Every little bit, Windows is also upgraded with new features and options – while still retaining all of the basics that make it so very easy to work with. It’s important to keep that in mind, as it’s one of the chief reasons that the operating system remains so wildly popular. People have decided that they want and are happy with the convenience that it provides to them, and they don’t want to give any of that up.

No matter what computer you use, the Windows operating system is probably what you have and most likely what you want to keep. You can try out other options, but you’ll most likely come back to Windows because of the simplicity and the ease of it. Most people who use another operating system only do so for specific purposes, and they switch back and forth between Windows and their other option.

Enter Windows 7. This operating system is one of the best Microsoft has ever done. The best thing about the new operating system is they have moved most of their information into the task bar. For years, Windows had seemed to labor as if there was no real use for the task bar. This only created conflict about what to do with the task bar. These days the task bar has everything. It has an icon for the internet explorer as well as the Media Player and a setting for files down there. It’s goal was to transform everything into an organized work station. This, of course, makes the student and the small business owner equally happy as this makes working the computer a breeze.

What makes the task bar even better is there is a box that appears around the icon to let the user know that it is being run. This way if there are applications that can be eliminated to make the computer run faster then they will know which ones are running. It’s the most efficient improvement Windows has ever made and it’s the kind of improvement that is making people take notice and make Microsoft 7 their preferred browser.

The System tray has long been a sore spot for many of the previous windows version users. The tray was very dense and filled with applications and programs that no one seemed to need or want. It was just a way to clutter something that was better left uncluttered. There alerts weren’t any better either. The alerts, which were in the form of word balloons often came up for no reason to provide information that no user cared about. To say that it was unpopular was an understatement. Many in charge saw the need for the change and made it happen it a very good way.

Here’s what they did. Let’s say a user downloads a program and that program is set to have these useless balloons pop up and spout messages no one cares about, well now they simply can’t. These programs are now forbidden by Windows to do that. This makes for a much cleaner System tray. You can also manage what applets are in the system tray. If there is one in there that is shouting messages at you, you can simple go into the revamped action center and fix it. If you don’t want something in the system tray then you can simply remove it. Its the best improvement to their operating system in a long time.

Windows 7 has taken the PC world by storm. It’s the first time in a long time that Microsoft has had an answer to the Mac Os, which is largely considered to be the best operating system on the market. For Window 7 it has been a chance to show they they belong with the big boys and they are making it interesting for Mac. One of the things that Microsoft has done to make Windows a giant in the market with the introduction of 7 was to start a home group.

Through the years houses are being equipped with more and more computers. There used to just be a family PC and now there are a whole cluster of computers from netbooks to laptops. The issue has been connecting these computers. A person who works on their laptop might also work on their pc and then transferring or viewing files is not always the easiest. In the situation of the Windows 7 they have created a home group. The purpose of this group is to allow users to share within other computers that are also on Windows 7. This is huge because it’s been a long time complaint of users who have tried to network their PC’s.

This is a boon to Windows as users can switch and allow access from one computer to the other. This makes reading files, pictures, and transferring documents easy to do and allows users to embrace the new Windows OS. This is also important because houses with multiple Mac’s are not nearly as common as houses with multiple PC’s.

These advancements to Windows 7 have made it one of the best operating systems on the market. With the money you can save versus buying an apple makes the case for the Windows 7 as the only choice for many people’s next computer.

Windows 7 is the latest invention from the bright minds at Microsoft. It’s operating system has been a hit since it’s release and there are number of enhancements that make it one of the most popular operating systems in the company’s history. From a more user friendly features to a better toolbar, there are a lot of reasons to stand up and cheer for this great OS, but the journey to get to these new features and this much improved system has a lot more than just simple production. As a matter of fact, the Windows 7 has gone through some serious changes.

Everyone may remember the problems with the last OS which was the widely criticized Windows Vista. This came only after Windows XP which was considered to be a vast improvement over anything that Windows has done up to that point. After XP ,Windows had decided to do a version that looked much like 7 which was going to be called Blackcomb. The idea was that Blackcomb would be focused almost solely on searching and storing data. There would be a state of the art storage system. Then Windows decided to delay it and release a version called Longhorn. Longhorn had eventually absorbed some of the ideas that Blackcomb was going to have.

The issue then came when there operating systems were running amok with viruses. This caused Windows to stop production on anything that was more technically advanced and instead tried to focus on getting rid of the viruses. So they tabled the big changes and instead. Once they got back to Longhorn they had cut out a number of features that were intended for it. They released Windows Vista to start then then decided to release 7 as an upgrade in function, but only a slight upgrade in the design of it. Windows 7 has been a hit on the market and is one of the very best operating systems the company has ever released.

Vista, however, seemed to fall short. There wasn’t a large number of people who were happy with what they got and Microsoft received wide spread criticism for releasing a system that wasn’t at all ready for primetime. There gripes were many and were often justified.

One of biggest criticisms was that windows was partnering up with the outside world to make it’s goal the protection of copyrighted media. There were a lot of steps taken to make sure that users could copy cd’s that were copyright protected. This is a function that early Windows systems didn’t have to worry about. But now users were feeling that they Windows was sticking their noses into an issue that they shouldn’t concern themselves with.

Maybe the biggest problem was that they made the system requirements for Vista so large that it was hurting a lot of the people who wanted to purchase it. So many computers weren’t up to the capabilities that the computer required. This meant that purchasing Vista wasn’t an option, or it was going to be an issue. This caused people to stick with their existing XP model which didn’t have the problems that Vista had and didn’t need the upgrade that Vista did.

There are several other reasons why Vista wasn’t a popular computer operating system but these are just a couple of the major concerns. With Windows 7 on the market, you are likely to say goodbye to Vista forever.

Windows didn’t start as the interface that everyone sees now. As a matter of fact, Windows used to be based off the DOS model. The first version of Windows, released in 1985 was the DOS. The early version of Microsoft Windows was probably much different than anyone would believe these days. There wasn’t many applications beyond clipboard and calculator. There wasn’t tiling boxes. Only one window could be open at a time. These were advanced at the time, but still so far from where they needed to be.

In 1987 the Microsoft Company released their second version of Windows. This version allowed for more keyboard shortcuts and it also allowed for the use of expanded computer memory. This made way for version 2.1 which had a much better grasp of the expanded memory.

These early versions were aimed at getting DOS out of the picture so that users could do all their computing right through windows. It’s ability to control and access the memory to run applications regardless of the available size and also to give an application more memory when the situation called for it.

When Microsoft released the 3.0 version it was the time when the operating system and the global recognizing began. There was an enormous buzz about it and it took the company to levels it hadn’t reached before. Windows continues to be a staple of the home and office computer and everyone remembers just how far it has really come.

It is often tough to quantify the impact that a company, or a brand, has made on it’s industry. It’s known that Calvin Klein is a designer of popular men and women’s fashion, but it’s hard to determine if this brand made of broke anything in the fashion world, or if there was a lasting impact to Calvin Klein being around at all.

In the world of computers there is often the same questions for a variety of brands, but there is also clear cut influences. There may be no bigger influence to the way the world interacts with computers than Microsoft and it’s Windows operating system. It’s the gold standard of operating systems and since it’s inception in 1985 it’s been revolutionary in how the world does it’s business and enjoys the computer.

It’s first influence may have had more to do with how it made the computer accessible to the common user. Prior to Windows, users worked of the DOS model. The main purpose of the NT model was the ability to be both hardware and software portable. There were a number of other OS that NT has supported including Intel, Alpha, and Itanium. The NT has what is known as a common code. Then Windows NT released a 3.1 version that utilized the memory in a 32 bit flat fashion.

This Windows NT was rather well received but what was important was the lasting impact that NT had on various models. One of the things that computers use to compute information is the binary numeral system. This is also called the base 2 number system. The way this system works is code is represented into 2 numbers. Those two number are 0 and 1. This system is used by all modern computer systems. It is also used in digital circuitry.

The history of the binary numeral system can be traced all the way back to the Indian scholar Pingala who developed a set of advanced math concepts that he used to describe the idea of prosody. What Pingala was able to do was apply the same principles of morse code to this concept. He used binary numbers as both long and short sounds.

You see, in China there was a thing called classic text. This is where eight trigrams and 64 hexagrams were analogous to the three bit as well as the six bit binary number. In the 11th Century their scholar known as Shao Yong had come up with a way of placing these hexagrams that would line up with the sequence from 0 to 63. While there can be no way of knowing if Shao understood the basic principle of binary computation it is evidence that at some point these things did matter and were a stepping in stone into how they are used in today’s advanced computer age. These same kind of sets have also been found in African divination systems and have also been used in Western geomancy. This two based system is used throughout Africa as well. As long as computers are made the binary number system will continue to be a way of programming the software on them.

If you have Microsoft Windows (and really, the only people who don’t probably also don’t have a computer… which leads one to wonder how they might be reading this), you have probably never noticed that there are some strange things involved in the operating system. If you ever want to frustrate yourself over nothing, you need only try to make a folder named Con. No matter how many times you try to create it, that folder will always revert to being called “New Folder.” But if you think that little tidbit is strange, you really haven’t seen anything yet. The strangest thing that has been identified with Windows actually concerns Microsoft Word and its commands.

Believe it or not, there are actually commands you can issue to Word, in much the same way as you can program Excel (and modify its user interface) using Visual Basic. While there is no known exhaustive list of these commands, there is a quirky one which has been making the rounds lately. All you have to do is type in “=rand(200,99)” on the first line of Word, then hit Enter, and you will find that it does a great deal of typing for you. So much typing, in fact, that you may not want to do this if you are running a lot of programs at the time. While it can be an amusing way to leave a friend a “present,” the effect is only mildly amusing – you probably won’t impress anybody with it.

The first time you enter “=rand(200,99),” you will receive about 13 pages of “the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog,” repeated over and over… and over and over again. If you really like that old typing meme (which is notable in that it uses every letter, thus making sure they actually work), try entering the command again. It will actually continue entering the repetitious wording for around 53 more pages. In some cases, if you enter the code a few times, it will actually just keep on entering the same text. Then try getting rid of it.

What you see isn’t always what you can get. You are at home and you have just decided to purchase a new version of Microsoft Windows. You have seen all the cool features and you are excited about the prospect of what this amazing piece of technology can do for you. However, once you get it up and running on your computer you quickly come to the realization that it has transformed your computer…and not in a good way. You are now watching your computer struggle to boot up programs and you can’t seem to get anything to close when you want it to. Is it possible that Windows has actually hurt your computer? Is there anything you can do now short of buying a whole new computer?

The fact is that windows is an amazing system but it’s a system that takes up a good amount of memory and hard drive space. If you want it to work at its optimum level then you need a computer that can support it. Perhaps your computer is just a few years old which might not make a difference for most things but when it comes to the operating system you use it could mean a lot more than you think.

So what do you do once your computer is too slow to run Windows at it’s optimum level but you still wish to? Well first if there are any bugs or fixes that need to be done you can obtain Windows downloads from a number of sites and that could help. Otherwise, you can go into your control panel and change many of the settings to make sure that some of the more gimmicky and graphic heavy processes are eliminated. This could take some of the fun out but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a great operating system.

If you are the type of person who just hates to read things, he Internet is really, really, really big. If you like a little bit more of an explanation, you are in for quite the eye full. For one thing, any declaration about how big the Internet is will be wrong the instant it is stated. Like a life form, the Internet is growing on a constant basis. So now that we have established that any estimate of the Internet’s size is going to be inherently flawed to the point of wrongness, let’s estimate the Internet’s size. The Internet has been estimated at containing 100 million web sites, with over 11.5 billion pages amongst these sites. And from all of these pages on all of these sites, there are roughly 100 trillion words on the Internet.

These are some really huge numbers. No human being can visualize them, in fact, without relating them to something in the abstract. So let’s put forth an example. Let’s pretend for a moment that you are the sort of social butterfly who has 100 friends – and not Myspace friends, real ones whom you actually know and regularly talk to. Each of these friends decides to make one million web sites, as they are all workaholic, masochistic web site designing maniacs. Each and every one of these friends will take an average of three hours to code up a basic site, which can then be expanded outward using software (yes, this is a highly simplified example; what of it?).

Assuming your friends devote 8 hours a day to their new found obsessions, the million web sites apiece are going to take them 375,000 days apiece, or 1,097 years and some change. This makes your friends a bunch of workaholic, masochistic, immortal web site designing maniacs. And it will probably strip away any sort of illusions of customer service the users of these web sites might expect.

Most of the world thinks that Linux is the be all end all of the operating systems out there, and that Microsoft is the devil. While no one can say for sure if the company has a satanic affiliation or not (and it would be foolish to completely rule out the possibility), the truth of the matter is that there is both good and evil and everyone. And in the same vein as this basic truth, it is also true that there are both positive and negative qualities to anything you may come into contact with. Every dark cloud has a silver lining, and every silver lining has its affiliated dark cloud. While most people have drank the kool-aid on the notion that Windows is bad and Linux/Unix is good, there are definite exceptions. A billion people probably wouldn’t be using Windows if it didn’t work. Here are a couple of ways in which Windows works better than the operating systems that end in “nix.”

Windows XP (and because of its compatibility, Windows 7) is compatible with just about everything. If you are running a game, it will work in Windows. If you are running one of the best programs, such as AutoCAD, Visio, Product, Illustrator and Photoshop, they don’t just work in Windows; they work at their best in Windows. Now, you can probably tinker around, and hack for awhile to get some of these elite-level programs to work in Linux. Or you could just let it run on Windows, and devote your time to doing something more useful – perhaps practicing origami.

If you run a network with a bunch of servers, Windows Active Directory Service lets you do things more efficiently. When you want to change which server controls the domain, you only have to enter one command. And when one server is updated (anywhere in the world), all of the rest of your servers will receive the updates. You also have the ability to separate out different duties, so that different people can run different parts of the system, based on their individual skill sets.

If you are a part of that unfortunate majority of the world’s population that was de facto forced into using Microsoft Windows Vista, you may have noticed some bad things about the program. While the words, “Abandon all hope, ye who enter here” are mysteriously absent from the software’s license, they might as well have been written in 72 point font. Aside from the fact that it needs four times as much RAM to function as XP did (yes, the same XP that was released almost ten years ago), and the fact that Vista has had hundreds of patches released in only a few years, the software seems to be doing all that it can to clog up your precious computer.

Do you like things that run fast? Are cheetahs your dream pets (if not for the whole “would maul you into the next world” thing, at least), and horses the only kind of gambling you would even think of doing? If so, you had better run away from Vista just as quickly as you can, because it is pretty much anything but fast. Aside from the typical Microsoft bloat (in which every version of Windows has roughly 20% more code than the prior version), and the fact that its registry still has the tendency to clog up with programs which simply will not properly uninstall… the main difference with the infamous “blue screen of death” is that they changed the background color. That really wasn’t funny, Microsoft.

And while it is beyond the realm of most people’s experience to ever want to upgrade anything… wait, people upgrade stuff all the time. It really sucks that Vista often requires you to prove you bought it, just so that you can get a new license key and continue to use the operating system. But what also sucks is that a lot of the file types you grew so accustomed to with Windows XP don’t work anymore. Aren’t these the same file types that have been basically the same since Windows 3.1? Why would they make a change of that nature?

Windows programs can be extremely helpful when searching for information on pet insurance. Users can take advantage of the many different features that are found on Windows programs to navigate between and in such sites.

If you are an admin, it is possible that you may possess some masochistic tendencies, which may or may not be related to your choice of career. Which came first, the desire to harm yourself so that you do not need to go to work today, or the high enough level of self destructive hatred that you actually desire to work in such a profession? While nobody is quite sure of these things, you are not the target here. The target is the user, where the word “user” is Admin-ese for “moron.” If you have ever been in a situation where you did something out of pure habit, you doubtless understand the intense frustration. If you have ever accidentally deleted every computer from a network, or even every single file off of every computer in an entire network simply because you accidentally typed in a command in a slightly inappropriate way, you have hopefully been chastened to understand why systems administrators are probably a very short distance from becoming random vigilante snipers.

Do you realize how many things can go wrong in a network environment? Do you realize that if there are 100 computers, and each computer has 1,000 folders with ten files in each one, there are literally a million different things which can potentially go wrong? Considering that such a situation would only be the case on a very small network, the challenge of making sure the whole thing functions smoothly day in and day out could seriously drive a person into a bottle of the hard stuff. But did you know that admins are generally kindly, forgiving people who do not have sociopathic tendencies?

This is for the best, for obvious reasons. But did you know that there are actually things you can do which will reduce the amount of therapy your systems administrator will end up having to seek out? And did you know that there are things you can do that will keep your admin calm? For starters, be nice to these people, because they work hard for you. For another, be careful with commands.

If you design a program, the moment you create it is your intellectual property. A copyright does not even need to be applied for with any government organization, in order to be in force de facto. All you need to be able to prove is that you created it first, and no one else may claim it as their own (or receive the profits from its sales). This is incredibly convenient, especially in cases such as game design. If you design a popular game, after all, you are doubtless going to be hit with a bunch of imitators. And while there is nothing wrong with doing what works, everyone will have to respect that you created what you created.

Achieving a patent is a small miracle, in some cases. It is no coincidence that patent law specialists tend to charge $20,000, and the process itself can literally take years to complete. A patent on a piece of software can be subject to extreme levels of logical scrutiny. Two of the most anal retentive parts of human thought are the law and its interpretations, and the coding of software. This involves both of these disciplines.

Windows Media Player is such a droll name for a music playing program. How about Windows Shindig? Or maybe E-Banjo? The file name extensions could have gotten a revamp on the music front, too. Instead of all of that boring “Windows Media Audio” stuff, how about “Old Jug” files (.oj), or “Spoons in Harmony” (.sih)? Considering the country western tradition that is so powerful in Nashville, it isn’t too far out there to suggest that any folder containing sound files should carry the default name “Kenny Rogers.” Although, since he wasn’t the only musician to ever play a mean ditty, wouldn’t it have been cool if the operating system could have automatically detected the artist of the files, and named the folders accordingly? After all, there are two types of music in this world – country and western.

CD burners didn’t become popular in the mainstream until around 2000, so Windows Nashville wouldn’t have had a burner. But a second CD drive would have been a very convenient place to put your chewing tobacco. It’s nice to have a convenient place for all of the necessities of life, after all. And just in case something should randomly splatter on the screen (think chewing tobacco – we’re not trying to be really gross here), a protective plastic covering could have been a great peripheral.

It has been purported that there are more than 400 million Windows users in this world. While that figure is most likely very conservative (and was estimated back in 2005), the point is that a whole lot of people are using Windows all over the planet, right this second. It is rather like thinking about how many people might be picking their noses at any given moment; vaguely amusing, but something to think about if you’re really bored. There is an interesting statistic regarding the people who are actually trying to get something done, however. Believe it or not, Windows has been estimated to crash roughly 25 million times in any given day.

Now, since we are all bored people with computers (that have glorious, built in calculators), let’s run the numbers on how many crashes that is, to really put it into perspective. Since there are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour, there are 3600 seconds in an hour. Multiply that by 24 (the number of hours in the day – yeah, it’s for the benefit of that one person who momentarily forgot), and you have 86,400 seconds in a day. Now, 25,000,000 divided by 86400 comes out to just a little over 289 crashes every single second. A fun game to play if you like to hold your breath is to see how many crashes you can hold it through. Can you break 10,000 (roughly 34 seconds)? If not, you’ve been sitting behind a computer for way too long there, Tubbo.

Certainly you’ve heard of (and probably seen… way too often) the infamous “blue screen of death” that signifies the complete lack of coping skills windows is famous for having. Believe it or not, a Charles Schwab employee coined the phrase back in 1991, to basically state the obvious. Yes, it is blue. Yes, it is a screen. And no, what you were working on is not going to be coming back, ever. The old saying of “save early, save often” holds true when your operating system crashes enough to name the phenomenon.

Were you around when Microsoft dropped that steaming load of crap onto the hard drives of the world? Okay, that isn’t specific enough, as they’ve essentially been doing that for almost 25 years (since November of 1985, with the first publically available version of Windows). In this case, we’re talking about Vista, the overly hyped and under developed version of Windows that history will hopefully be as forgiving of as Windows Millennium Edition. The good news is, only a couple of years after Vista launched (and was absolutely thrashed by almost everybody who was suckered into using it), Microsoft is going the more subtle and most likely more effective route of devoting their energies to producing a solid product, instead of wrapping turds in silk ribbons.

Windows 7 is the latest flagship product from Microsoft, and has been reported to be a whole lot better than Vista was. While there is probably no good reason to ever stop using Windows 98 Special Edition, the computer gods have declared that every so often we must all capitulate to the hedonic treadmill and buy more stuff. And since there is no more pure expression of buying for its own sake than buying a piece of software that allows other software to do things you don’t actually need done, we need to bite the bullet and try out Windows 7. If the worse comes to the worst, we will do the same thing we have often done with Microsoft products; vow to never use them again… until a better version comes out, at least.

Apparently, out of the estimated billion people world wide who use Windows and its ilk, roughly 15 million people beta tested Windows 7 while they were still developing it. The funny thing is, while eight million of those people were official beta testers, seven million people were “unofficial,” which sounds like a more polite way of saying that they bootlegged copies of an unfinished operating system. Considering Microsoft’s hardliner stance on copyright infringement, it is surprising that those people were not taken in the night by Microsoft’s secret police.
