It is often tough to quantify the impact that a company, or a brand, has made on it’s industry. It’s known that Calvin Klein is a designer of popular men and women’s fashion, but it’s hard to determine if this brand made of broke anything in the fashion world, or if there was a lasting impact to Calvin Klein being around at all.
In the world of computers there is often the same questions for a variety of brands, but there is also clear cut influences. There may be no bigger influence to the way the world interacts with computers than Microsoft and it’s Windows operating system. It’s the gold standard of operating systems and since it’s inception in 1985 it’s been revolutionary in how the world does it’s business and enjoys the computer.
It’s first influence may have had more to do with how it made the computer accessible to the common user. Prior to Windows, users worked of the DOS model. This was a program that users had to know specifically typed commands in order to access it. However, Windows clearly changed everything. Now users were learning to use their Windows model to perform the same functions. These functions were coming with their own integrated applications that were simple to start but a good sign of things to come.
This instant accessibility was part of the reason that everyone started having a computer in the home. Once it became easy enough that the programmer and the dad and mom could use it all the same, people began thinking that it made sense to have it in the home. Pretty soon Windows was able to roll out applications for the student and for the office. This made it’s home appeal just as powerful as it’s corporate appeal was.
Windows has clearly changed the way the world runs. It’s impact is far reaching. It makes everyone wonder what the world was doing before it.
